George
Raymond Richard Martin best known as George R.R. Martin is an American novelist and short story writer in the fantasy, horror,
and science fiction genres, as well as a
screenwriter and television producer.
Martin was
born on September 20, 1948, in New Jersey. He is son of Raymond Collins Martin
and Margaret Brady Martin. The young Martin began writing and selling monster
stories for pennies to other neighborhood children. In 1970 he earned a degree
in Journalism from Northwestern University.
Martin began
selling science fiction short stories professionally
in 1970, at age 21. His first sale was "The Hero". After that, he won
several Hugo and Nebula awards. These awards granted by the American Association
of Writers of Science Fiction and Fantasy. In 1977, Martin published “Dying of
the Light”. This novel had a big success and Martin could devote himself
exclusively to literature.
He married
with Gale Burnick in 1975 but this marriage just lasted for four years. By the
time he was forty he had begun to work as screenwriter for several television
series but he did it just for a few years.
In 1996,
Martin published “A Game of Thrones”, the first book of his best seller “A Song
of Ice and Fire”. Nowadays Martin has written five of the seven parts of the
saga and he has sold more than 24 million copies worldwide. His best seller has
been translated into more than 20 languages. The fourth and fifth volumes
reached the top of The New York Times Best Seller lists upon their releases.
Martin’s fans hope that he will have finished the sixth book before 2015.
With the
popularity of the series growing, HBO optioned “A
Song of Ice and Fire” for a television adaptation in 2007. The series,
titled “Game of Thrones”,
premiered in April 2011 to great acclaim and ratings. Shortly after the
conclusion of the first season, the show received 13 Emmy Award nominations.
In 2011
Martin married with his former mistress Parris McBride. Today Martin is 65
years old and he wants to write more and more books.
